Friends and families came out to enjoy a movie in the great outdoors on Thursday, Sept. 20. Beth Audet photo.

Snuggled together and wrapped in blankets, friends and families were treated to an outdoor showing of the Incredibles 2 at the Spruce Hill Resort & Spa on Thursday, Sept. 20.

The event was presented by the United Way through funding received from the Red Cross and Health Emergency Management B.C.

For Susie Vicen, it was a chance for the family to spend time together outside.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to get out in the community and do something that’s family oriented and get them outdoors,” she said. “It’s nice to see families out.”

Vicen said she wondered whether a weekend showing might have gotten a better turnout.

Her kids usually go to bed at 7:30 p.m., right around the time the movie got started, so she said teachers might have a lot to deal with Friday morning.

Aside from the late night, she said an outdoor movie is “a unique thing to do.”

Little Alliya Pickering said she was excited for the movie but was underwhelmed by the outdoor aspect.

“It’s nice but I prefer inside,” said the 6-year-old.

Kody Worden, who snuggled up with his girlfriend of 16 months, didn’t mind the movie being shown outside.

“I think it’s really good. I mean, you just have to dress a little bit warmer, but it’s definitely a good experience.”

Ashlee Hyde, the United Way’s manager of resource and community development, said she wasn’t sure what to expect for their first outdoor movie night in 100 Mile, but was happy with the turnout.

“I think we got a really good crowd out tonight.”

When asked if she thought a weekend showing would have gotten a better turnout, she said she heard a lot of people mentioning it being a school night, but that some people were fine with the choice.

“I heard from one person that they’ve been counting down for two weeks, so that’s awesome.”

Hyde has been planning movie nights in Williams Lake for years, as a way to kick off their campaign season.

This is the first year they’ve been able to hold the event in 100 Mile as well and offer both events for free.

She said she hopes to include 100 Mile in the event for years to come, but might try to book Fresh Air Cinemas for the first week back to school.

Candy, chips, popcorn, cotton candy, pop and juice were also provided to moviegoers at no charge.
