People of all ages will be able to snuggle up and enjoy a family-friendly movie in the great outdoors on Sept. 20 and 21 thanks to United Way.

Ashlee Hyde, the manager of resource and community development, is organizing the movie nights.

“I’m just looking forward to being able to reach the community as a whole and just being there to have fun with everybody,” she said.

The outdoor movie night has historically run as a fundraiser in Williams Lake, to kick off the United Way’s campaign season.

This year, however, Hyde said the organization received funding through the Red Cross and Health Emergency Management B.C. to go toward community events in areas impacted by the 2017 wildfires.

“We’re using some of that funding to be able to provide the outdoor movie night for free to the community.”

The movie will show at 7 p.m. at the Spruce Hill Resort & Spa, in 108 Mile Ranch, on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Moviegoers will set up their blankets and chairs on the natural theatre-like slope of the resort’s tubing hill.

Another showing will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds on Friday, Sept. 21.

Snacks will also be provided at no charge.

“There’ll be popcorn and cotton candy, chips, pop and juice. We’ll have some hot chocolate and coffee, as well, available because it’ll be a little bit chilly,” said Hyde.

When asked what made them want to bring the movie night into the 100 Mile House community, she replied, “Just to give back to the community and to show that we’re here and we care and we support their resiliency.”

People wishing to attend should bring their own chairs or blankets and dress warmly for the occasion.

Mental health support agencies will also be present at the event should anybody need support or simply wish to talk.

“I’m really, really looking forward to having it in 100 Mile and we couldn’t do it without our sponsors and our volunteers.”
