It might look the same but it isn't

Readers should be aware of different yellow pages invoice scams

A comment posted on the 100 Mile House Free Press website, prompted a phone call to a 100 Mile House area businessperson.

Nadaya McNeil, McNeil & Son Logging Co. receptionist bookkeeper, wanted to warn other small businesses in the area.

"I received overdue invoices from Yellow-Page-Canada.com," McNeil says, adding at first thought it was the "real" thing.

"This is not Yellow pages; it is a complete scam."

Receiving an invoice for the amount of $1,573, McNeil says she decided to look into it, especially since it said second notice.

Calling the contact number, she learned the invoice was for a contract for a “national business directory,” which according to the person she called, lists the business for the tune of $129 per month for two years.

"We never entered into any kind of agreement with this company. I called them and told them I wouldn't be paying the invoice."

She adds the company spokesperson was persistent that McNeil pay, she told them she didn't want to hear from them again.

The Better Business Bureau website - mbc.bbb.org/article/yellow-pages-invoice-scams - has more information on the scam, which seems to have gone across the country.

If people feel they have been the victim or potential victim of the Yellow page scam, it is suggested they report the fraud to Competition Bureau or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (formerly Phonebusters); contact their local RCMP detachment; and report the fraud to the Better Business Bureau.

It would be very easy to get hooked in by this," says McNeil.
