Light-hearted curlers had a good time matching their skills against others and promoting a little fun rivalry at the Lac la Hache Curling Club Fun Spiel.

The annual tournament took place March 23 at the 100 Mile Curling Club, where the Lac la Hache club regularly plays.

The bonspiel attracted 14 teams, including two junior squads, and all played three draws of four ends each.

At the end of the day, the Barb McInnes team, with Helen Bailey, Brenda Bourassa and Bob Kelly claimed the championship and a $400 cash first prize.

McInnes says her team has entered the bonspiel several times, but this is its first victory. The team won all of its games, which was also a first, she notes.

"I'm always happy to win just one. I don't mind getting beat, but I hate like heck, getting skunked."

The second place Keith Wieduwilt team, with Sharon Bedford, Colleen Brown and Bob Shearer, won $200, and the third place Sally Gustafson team, with Vic Meyers, Sue Meyers and Garth McLean pocketed $100.

"There were lots of good curlers out there," says McInnes. "The games were close."

She was particularly happy to see so many youth entered in the competition.

"It's nice to see the young curlers. They are our future. It was also nice to see how they interacted so well with the older people. These kids are very helpful and pleasant."

Following the games, the club catered a dinner for all of the curlers and served cake in honour of Shearer's birthday, which was the next day.

"I'd say a good time was had by all and that's what it's all about. We like to play well, but we know none of us are going to the Brier.

For most of us, that boat has sailed. We do this to have a good time and wind up the year."

The Lac la Hache Curling Club has six teams which play every second Sunday afternoon of the season at the 100 Mile Curling Club.
