Figure skaters end season with home competition

Figure skaters with the 100 Mile & District Figure Skating Club took one last spin around the ice March 10

Figure skaters with the 100 Mile & District Figure Skating Club took one last spin around the ice March 10 before hanging up their skates for the season.

Nearly 40 members participated in the club's year-end skating skills competition, which featured competition solos and demonstrations of skills learned during the course of the year.

The event held all of the glitz, glamour and excitement of a figure-skating competition, with judges ranking the skaters' performances and medals awarded at the end.

"It was amazing," says club president Jen Plewes, indicating the competition was a perfect finale for a successful season.

"On a scale of one to 10, this year was a 10. We're pretty proud of how we did. It was lots of work and lots of effort, but worth it."

While parents might be looking forward to a break from the arena, Plewes says many of the skaters were sad to see the season end.

"There were some tears."

Everyone who participated in the skills competition went home with an award, and winners from first to fifth place in the Pre-preliminary Solo event were Brittany Boyd, Courtney Dolinski, Michaila Robinson, Amber Poirier and Paige Archie.

In Pre-elementary Solo competition, Haley Plewes was first, Mikayla Julseth was second and Hannah Duff was third.

Daneya Tessaro earned first place in Elementary Solo, followed by Melany Sanford in second place and Tanisha Bali in third.

Alyssa Lindberg was the only competitor in Senior Solo competition after Nicole Pennock withdrew due to illness.

The Canskate Group Skate division was popular and featured many of the club's newest skaters.

Group 1 was cancelled, and finishing in first place in group 2 was Laney Bob, followed by Deven Belcher in second place.

The group 3 winner was Mackenzie White, with Megan Glen in second place, followed by Keeley Pacheco in third.

In group 4, Gowen Pinkett led the pack, with Liam Greenhaulgh in second and Trey Pacheco in third.

Group 7 saw Leiah L'Heureaux take first place, followed by Kylie Davis in second, and in group 8, Amber Conway was first, with Sarah Robinson second, followed by Kennedy Kolisnyk and Rachel Sakiric.
