BC Golf Association Zone 8, of which the South Cariboo is a member, has been without a junior tour for two years, leaving young local players without local tournaments to attend.
That may change with the inaugural South Cariboo Junior Championship golf tournament, which takes place on Aug. 13 at the 108 Resort Golf Course.
It is intended to become an annual event and it's an important step in the process of resurrecting the junior tour.
100 Mile House resident Caroline Jeffrey is working on getting the tour up and running again for the 2012 season. She and 108 Resort golf pro Kevin Hanbury are working together on the South Cariboo Championship.
The 18-hole stroke play tournament will include 13 years and under, 14-16 and 17-18 years divisions.
"We'd like to make it a major tournament for kids from Kamloops to Prince George," says Hanbury. "We want to start something at the 108 and take the leadership for a junior program in this area."
Jeffrey says the junior tour will give young golfers the opportunity to play at a competitive level within their zone and compete for placings at the provincial level.
Registration for the South Cariboo Junior Championship is being taken until Aug. 12 at the 108 pro shop and the cost is $35, which includes 18 holes of golf, dinner and prizes. The tournament starts at noon.
