To the editor:
I was sorry to see the 100 Mile Free Press coverage on the proposed South Cariboo Rec Centre expansion referendum in last week’s paper, particularly the large front-page photo alluding to an imaginary pool that has nothing to do with what is actually being proposed in this community.
The Free Press fell into the same myopic trap many others on Facebook have regarding this issue: that this is about a Pool vs the Rec Centre. In fact, there is no formal proposal for a pool.
I think bringing an imaginary pool into the Rec Centre expansion story distorts the facts, facts which our citizenry need to make an informed decision in the upcoming referendum.
The Rec Centre expansion should be considered on its own merits, absent any talk of a pool proposal that doesn’t exist. If a group wants to bring a proposal for a pool forward, the more power to them. We can then consider that on its merits too. But for now, I hope our community doesn’t lose sight of what is actually in front of us, because we might end up with nothing.
I think the Free Press can do a better job of helping inform its readers on this important decision.
