My son seems to be picking up more and more words by the day. A particular favourite seems to be imitating animals lately. He’s got some dinosaur toys that when he moves them about he goes “grrr, grrr.” When he does it, it sounds as if he’s had a bad smoking habit for 40 or so years and is breathing in and out regularly.

His absolute favourite are cows or “bull” as he seems to universally dub any cattle most of the time (occasionally he’ll go for “cow”). However, imitating them is also popular as he goes “moo!”

This got brought to a whole new level, as we brought him to the 4-H Show and Sale in Williams Lake. He, of course, got very excited about many a “bull,” but also to touch pigs (he doesn’t quite have “oink” down yet), see turkeys, pet miniature goats and some sheep, bunnies etc.

He’s also long been imitating the cat, going “meow, meow.” We’ve also had some problems with mice before. Especially when we moved in. However, after many mouse traps, a dog who occasionally gets lucky and a cat named Tally who’s a mighty hunter and came with the house, the mice had all but disappeared. The dog will often eat the mice if she catches them but Tally never does. Recently, you could occasionally hear a bit of scratching again, although there were no signs in the house whatsoever.

Yesterday this culminated in my son’s best animal impression yet. I’d already left for work. My wife was still in bed while he was crawling around the bedroom floor. Now there’s no reason he would know what a mouse sounds like. As far as we’re aware, he’d never seen one and we’d never made the sound for him before.

Next thing my wife knew, he was standing next to the bed holding a dead mouse while going “meow, meow.”

Thanks, cat.
