Nov 7, 1932 - Jan 3, 2018
Setsuko was born in Shimosato-Tenma, Japan in 1932. In her youth, she received her certification as a knitting teacher after attending school in Nagoya, Japan, as well as learning the traditional arts of ikebana (flower arranging) and chabana (Japanese tea ceremony).

She married Toru in 1956, and had their first child, Mari, in 1957. Within the first few weeks after Mari was born, Toru left Japan to work for his uncle in Canada, leaving Setsuko and Mari with family. In 1963, after the death of her mother, Setsuko arrived in Canada with Mari to start a new life with Toru. In 1964, their second daughter, Ruri, was born. The family lived in various areas of 100 Mile House for 26 years until Toru and Setsuko decided to move back to Japan after Toru's retirement.

While raising her family in 100 Mile House and working at the Red Coach Inn, Setsuko made many treasured friends.

After residing in Japan for 23 years, she returned to Canada in July 2013, and lived with Mari and Randy until her passing.

She is survived by daughters, Mari (Randy) Schenkeveld and Ruri (Steve) Kozuki; grandchildren, Sonja (Darren), Jennifer, and Jared; great-granddaughters, Lily and Grace; treasured friends, Fernanda Batalha, Isabel and Don Jones; beloved dog, Charlie in Canada; and brother-in-law, Kumio (Kimiko) Minato; sister-in-law, Noriko Madokoro; and various nieces and nephews in Japan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the 100 Mile United Church, located at

169 Dogwood Crescent North, 100 Mile House.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Millsite Lodge/Fischer Place will be greatly appreciated.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Street, the nurses and care aides at Millsite Lodge/Fischer Place, the Home Support staff and care aides, and the Adult Day Service staff for the great care they gave Setsuko.

Also, special thanks to Fernanda Batalha, Don and Isabel Jones for all their help and support.
