March 17, 1941 - April 13, 2011

Ronald Sharkey was born in Vancouver. At the age of six his family moved to Surrey. During his school years, he found employment on local farms. After finishing school, he attended VVI to study electronics. He then worked in many fields with the telephone company. Over the years, he moved from Surrey to Kamloops, then Lone Butte and finally to 100 Mile House.

He was married to his wife Thelma (Erickson) O’Bee on July 1, 1966.

Ron is survived by his mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Michael Safronick, 100 Mile House; his wife Thelma, four children: Terri Haywood (Doug), Parksville; Lyle Sharkey (Corinne), Naniamo; Leon Sharkey, 100 Mile House; and Teresa Tennant (Lane), Ottawa; eight grandchildren: Amanda and Josh Haywood, Michael, Anthony and Bria Sharkey; Kaylee and Jacob Sharkey, and Piper Tennant; brothers: Doug (Renate) and Clifford Sharkey, sisters: Joan Williams, Yvonne Gautier (Paul), Margaret Gilbert (Dave), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In 1976, Ron was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. He was able to work until 1986 before going on disability pension, then taking early retirement in 1996. The MS slowly ravished his body until he was confined to a wheelchair. He passed suddenly and unexpectedly in his sleep while at Fischer Place for respite. He will be forever in our hearts.

A celebration of life was held at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, April 19th, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations are asked for the MS Society or St. Timothy’s Anglican Church.
