After a very short illness, Ethel passed away peacefully with her husband and daughters at her side on February 28, 2011 at 100 Mile District Hospital.
Ethel was born on September 13, 1924 in Murton, Seaham, Co. Durham, England to William and Mary Cole. She joined the RAF in 1943 where she met her future husband Donald Gordon Smith, who was serving in the RCAF. She became a war bride when they married on June 2, 1945; they then moved to Canada and built their home in Burnaby, B.C. There they raised their two daughters before moving the family to 100 Mile House in 1965, settling in Forest Grove.
Ethel worked at Browns Drug Store and then CIBC before they both retired and enjoyed travelling. They enjoyed their regular trips to Reno and she was always happy in the casino or playing Bingo.
Ethel is survived by her loving husband of 65 years Don; daughters Donna (Peter) Wilcox, Lynn (Larry) Novakowski, grandchildren Lloyd Wilcox, Lorraine Wilcox, Leanne (Darren) Bloy, Scott (Kristy) Novakowski. Her pride and joy were her great-grandchildren Austin, Mercedes, Taya, and Molly. She is also survived by her brother Tom Cole in England, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Mary Graham and sister-in-law Molly Cole.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
There will be no memorial service at Ethel’s request.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the BC Cancer Agency, 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, B.C., V1Y 5L3.
The family wish to express their appreciation and special thanks to Dr. Lubbe, the nursing staff at 100 Mile Hospital and the wonderful care workers who looked after her at home.
We will love you always and forever.
