Prince George man threatened police with chainsaw, subdued with pepper spray

Lighting campfire led to assaults of firefighters, RCMP members

Around 8:30 p.m. on July 3, 100 Mile House RCMP were called to an assault in progress on Marguerite Road at Deka Lake.

Members of the Deka Lake & District Volunteer Fire Department were responding to call of a campfire that had been set. When the members of the fire department arrived in the area, they were approached by a 23-year-old Prince George man.

After being reminded there was a fire ban in place, he became abusive toward the firefighters and attempted to flee in the fire truck.

The firefighters managed to stop the Prince George resident from taking the fire truck, but two were assaulted during the process.

The 100 Mile RCMP members arrived at the scene and attempted to speak with the man who was belligerent with officers.

He then grabbed a chainsaw, starting it up and used it in a threatening manner toward the police officers.

A brief stand off ensued and the man was subdued with pepper spray. He then assaulted one officer and then the Prince George man was taken into custody.

Two officers and two firefighters were treated for their injuries by emergency health services personnel. The Prince George man is facing numerous charges, including assault, assault with a weapon, assaulting a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and breach of probation.
