UPDATE (2 p.m.): The official results are in and show no changes from the preliminary votes.

ORIGINAL: The preliminary results for the Interlakes Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) referendum on Aug. 18 were announced that evening.

‘Yes’ was the overwhelming response by the community’s residents with 251 voting in favour and only four opposing.

Residents were asked to decide on buying or leasing two new engine/pump trucks for the Interlakes VFD, with the current trucks needing to be replaced in 2019 and 2021 to meet insurance requirements. If they are unable to get insurance, they would not be allowed to operate.

The ‘yes’ vote means the community is in favour of the Interlankes VFD borrowing money to buy the two trucks outright, rather than leasing them.

The official results will be announced on the afternoon of Aug. 20.
