Police standoff ends in arrest

Distressed man threatens to ignited propane bottles

100 Mile House RCMP members were dispatched to a report of a possible suicidal 44-year-old male who left his residence in a van on Aug. 25.

While responding to this complaint, another call was received stating the same male had crashed a van into the front yard of a residence in the 5900 block of Highway 24 at Lone Butte causing considerable damage to the property.

The man made comments that he would be igniting propane bottles if the police came for him.

When police arrived, a perimeter was set up and some residences were evacuated.

Negotiations with the male suspect were unsuccessful and the RCMP Emergency Response Team was activated.

Around 10:50 p.m., the man was observed exiting the van and tried to evade police. He was arrested by the RCMP Dog Handler out of Williams Lake without incident and was taken into custody.

A number of charges are being considered, including dangerous driving, mischief and uttering threats. The man was held pending an assessment under the Mental Health Act, and the RCMP investigation is ongoing.
