Plant levy suggested

Cariboo Regional District wants freight tax on imported invasive plants

Cariboo Regional District staff has been directed to develop some more resolutions to take to the next Union of British Columbia Municipalities annual general meeting.

One resolution proposes implementing a freight tax on invasive plants shipped into the province, to help regional districts fund management of invasive and noxious plants.

Although the resolution failed to pass at the recent North Central Local Government Association (NCLGA), Area L Director Bruce Rattray says invasive plants are a real problem to control, but it's a "tough sell" to target those purchased for ponds and gardens.

"It's a big deal, and there's far too little funding going in to make a significant impact."
