The burning debris was flying out the front door at this house fire on Elliot Lake Road on Nov. 4. Firefighters tore down the ceiling to access the attic space where the blaze caused billowing smoke and significant damage.

An afternoon fire at Elliot Lake on Nov. 4 kept the 108 Mile Ranch Volunteer Fire Department (108MRVFD), along with mutual aid from 100 Mile House Fire-Rescue, busy.

The call came in around 12:30 p.m. and 108MRVFD chief Marcelle Ried says smoke was billowing from the modular home in the 5400-block of Elliot Road upon the arrival of crews.

There were 20 firefighters on scene for three hours, with 10 members and three trucks from each department. Ried explains he quickly deployed members into the home to attack the fire between the ceiling and the roof structure.

"Most of the damage was done already. It contained itself into that attic and burned throughout the whole attic, so our primary job was to take the ceiling down and put all the hot spots out."

He notes some difficulty occurred from the tin roof that had a secondary roof structure installed overtop.

"It was quite tough fighting it in the ceiling, but all in all, it went quite well."

The home's attic space was completely damaged from the fire, water and smoke. Unfortunately, he adds, the occupants were uninsured.

However, firefighters were able to save much of the interior from damage, so Ried says he thinks the home could feasibly be salvaged and rebuilt.
