Campsall elected first vice-chair at NCLGA

Mayor Mitch Campsall will now be wearing two political "hats" after being elected first vice-president of the North Central Local Governments Association (NCLGA).

At the NCLGA annual general meeting (AGM) in Prince Rupert on May 11-13, the District of 100 Mile House mayor was elected to the position without opposition.

Being the sole candidate, he says, was the result of his "strong campaign" and having a lot of regional and municipal support in place well ahead of time.

Coun. Bill Hadden was unsuccessful in his bid for director at large.

Campsall adds the NCLGA membership voted in favour of a resolution the district put to the floor, for all seniors in the province to receive Medical Services Plan (MSP) at no charge.

"It's just another burden on seniors who, in my opinion, have brought our country to where it is. We keep charging them for everything, and I have a problem with that."

Now, the resolution will go to UBCM for approval before potentially being proposed for new legislation, he notes.

"We had some time to talk to CN about the issues that our industries are having getting [access to] railway cars."

Since next year's AGM will be held in 100 Mile House, Campsall and his district staff also noted what worked or didn't work at the conference.

"Food is going to be the biggest issue, I think, that we will have in bringing the conference here. It's a lot of people who have got to be fed, and the food was a bit of an issue [in Prince Rupert]."

Getting sponsorships for the convention is another matter to be dealt with, as Campsall says the district needs the community to get behind the plan, and help pass the message that downtown 100 Mile is vibrant.

"A fair amount of money will be spend in our community over this. We're really excited, and we've been working on this now for a year."
