Laura Laing has lived in the South Cariboo for 22 years, looking for a change in her life. Now she is the manager and vice-president of the Farmer’s Market and is involved in a lot of volunteer work and community projects.

Question: When did you initially get involved with politics and how long have you been involved?

Answer: I have not run for office before, however, I have been on the board of some non-profit organizations.

Q: What made you want to run for councillor? Is it your first time?

This is my first attempt at running for councillor. I want to be a councillor because I have a passion for helping people. I see a lot of citizens who would benefit from increased social programs and new economic opportunities. My goal is to help create a more vibrant, diversified, and healthy community. As a long-time resident, I understand the strengths and weaknesses of the area.

Q: What are some of the more important issues in the 100 Mile House District?

I believe some of the important issues are:

Support for families, seniors, and low-income residents - obtaining funding for things like childcare, low-cost housing, dental care program.

Local food security - supporting and enhancing our agriculture industry, increasing community garden space, providing fresh food to the community, operating a community kitchen to feed people, emergency preparedness; a stable business economy - supporting our local businesses, encouraging new ventures, diversifying our industries.

Q: What do you wish to accomplish during your term if elected?

If elected, I hope to increase well-being in our area by partnering with community groups to obtain funding for more programs, services, and recreational facilities. I also hope to make better use of The Lodge Complex for arts, cultural, and food events. I will advocate at the provincial level for more funding so that we can have these things without increasing property taxes.

Q: Why should the people of 100 Mile House vote for you?

I care about the people of 100 Mile House and the surrounding area. I am reliable, supportive and hard-working, and I believe that if we all work together, we can bring about positive change that will benefit all members of our community.

Q: How can supporters get in touch with you or find more out about your platform?

I can be reached by phone at 250-397-2852, or by email at lmarkila@gmail.com, or on my facebook page, Laura Laing for Councillor.
