The District of 100 Mile House Council approved the installation of two columbiaras at the 100 Mile Cemetery at its Tuesday, April 9 council meeting.

A columbaria is a structure for the storage of funerary urns that hold cremated remains of the dead. The columbiaras will be installed by Sunset Memorial, a Calgary-based supplier and manufacturer who specializes in “family and commercial columbiara” according to their website. They will be double-sided.

The cost will be around $54,252 with applicable taxes. All Council members voted for the installation.

At that same meeting council approved the 100 Mile Pride Society’s request to close Birch Avenue between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on July 27, 2024.

The closure is for the 2024 Pride Parade, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. according to an e-mail correspondence between Saturn Zezza of the 100 Mile Pride Society and Sheena Elias. The route will travel down Birch Avenue, turn left on Fourth Avenue, turn right on Cedar Avenue and finish at Centennial Park.

Coun. Donna Barnett said that the Pride Society has a responsibility to contact businesses affected by the temporary closure, noting that they did a “good job” last year. All Council members voted for the closure.

Lastly, the District received a request for a $500 grant from the 100 Mile House Community Band.

In a letter to the District, Eric Grummisch, the president of the 100 Mile House Community band, stated that the band has expenses “which include the purchase of sheet music, venue rental and association tools.”

The band noted that the BC Band Association’s lending library is no longer available, which has forced them to purchase sheet music. Council passed a motion to refer the request to the South Cariboo Joint Committee and to notify the band of the Grants for Assitance application and policy.
