The District of 100 Mile House has expressed concerns at Royal Canadian Legion branch 260’s proposal to rename Alder Avenue to Veterans Way.

Council discussed the proposal on Tuesday, March 26 during their regular council meeting. The Legion originally made the request via letter on February 25, noting the change would be similar to when the district renamed Airport Road to Wrangler Way in 2016.

Both Mayor Maureen Pinkney and Coun. Donna Barnett expressed concerns about the change, mainly the cost to local businesses. Barnett said the name change is not viable.

“It would cost businesses a lot of money,” Barnett said.

The concerns raised by Barnett were echoed by Coun. Dave Mingo and Coun. Jenni Guimond. Other concerns included emergency vehicles being confused as to where the proposed road would be with a different name. Council ultimately decided to deny the Legion’s request.

Proposed policy for secondary suites still under review

The District of 100 Mile House’s policy on secondary suites remains under legal review.

In a Committee of the Whole meeting on March 26, Joanne Doddridge, the district’s director of economic development and planning, said that she hoped to have a policy for secondary suites ready by this week, but said that it is still stuck in legal review.

“We think it won’t be ready until early April,” estimated Doddridge on when the legal review would be done.

Council approves funding for new fire truck

The District of 100 Mile House has approved the purchase of a new truck for 100 Mile Fire Rescue.

The new fire truck is a 2024 F-550 RMP Type 6 4x4 4dr Brush truck, which will cost the District $296,621.86. During the Feb. 27 Committee of the Whole meeting, fire chief Dave Bissat was “fortunate to identify an available unit” noting there is a high demand for these vehicles right now.

Council chose to waive the district purchasing policy in authorizing the purchase of the truck.
