Nominations for the 2023 South Cariboo Citizen of the Year are open now.

From now until June 15 Donna Barnett, president of the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce, is calling on the community to nominate community volunteers and others who made a positive impact on their community for the award. Barnett said they can be your friend, a coworker, a family member or someone you know from community events.

“What qualifies someone to be a citizen of the year is someone who volunteers their time unselfishly and gives back to the community,” Barnett said. “There are so many people out there who never get nominated. If every organization could just think of that one person that has done so much for others. These people deserve to be recognized.”

Nomination forms are available at the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce office, the 100 Mile Free Press office and online at southcariboochamber.org. All you have to do is pick a form up, fill it out with the person’s name and contact info and describe what they do for the community. The more details you can provide the better, Barnett noted.

Since opening up nominations in mid-April Barnett has only received one nominee. She’s hoping to receive more noting once again that there are plenty of worthy people across the South Cariboo who could and should be put forward.

After the nomination period closes Barnett and a panel made up of 20 past citizens of the year will review the nominees and select a winner. She noted that even just being nominated for such an award is an honour.

“It also shows other people in the community what you can do to help your community and your fellow man,” Barnett remarked. “It’s a great honour, to be Citizen of the Year, there’s none higher.”

Nomination forms can be dropped off at both the chamber and the Free Press office or emailed to manager@southcariboochamber.org.

Barnett said she is still working to secure a venue to announce the 2023 South Cariboo Citizen of the Year later this summer. She mentioned she has an event in mind but still needs to confirm, noting only that it will likely be around July 1. Anyone with further questions can reach out to Barnett at 250-395-6124.
