Scouting has a language all its own.

That is part of the fun of being in a youth club, such as Scouts Canada, says 100 Mile District Scouts secretary Sarah Smith.

During Scout and Guide Week, youths and leaders remember the founders, Lord and Lady Powell.

"Youth have been making woggles for their neckers, working on their Climate Change Crest and Green Stars to put on red sashes, so when they are standing with their sixers it is with Scout pride," says Smith.

"If you understand that, congratulations and come and join us in the fun."

Beaver Scouts take their cues from the book Fun at the Pond and the program is a jumping off point from the stories, says Smith. Leaders are given names from the book, including Rainbow, Bubbles and Tic Tac.

Cub Scouts use The Jungle Book as the inspiration for their programs, she says, adding leaders are named Akala, Baloo and Raksha.

"Our local youth have been having so much fun ice-skating, swimming and hiking. It is hard to imagine they still find the time to work on earning important badges and life lessons like they do every week."

Scouts, leave theme books behind and work on tougher stuff, and learn the cornerstones of Scouting, the Scout Promise and Scout Law, which helps instil character, leadership and fellowship.

Venturers and Rovers are the elders of the youth groups and the programs they run are youth-inspired and designed with adult leadership as council to their sometimes very ambitious plans, Smith says.

"Building a canoe or making a Quonset hut out of snow at Manning Park is just another day for this group."

With any youth group, she adds, volunteers are the cornerstone to success. If your childhood memories include happy sing-alongs around the campfire and you wish to volunteer or you would like your child to enjoy these experiences, call Smith at 250-395-2704.
