Bill Robertson enjoyed receiving his retirement gift from his fellow volunteers at Parkside Art Gallery on April 12. South Cariboo Arts & Culture Society vice-president Claudia Ring

The meeting room downstairs at Parkside Art Gallery was filled with well wishers celebrating Bill Robertson's retirement.

Robertson volunteered with the South Cariboo Arts & Culture Society, which has operated the art gallery for more than 10 years, and most of his time was taken up by keeping the financial books.

"When I first started here, I could fill out the accounting on half a page, Robertson said, adding the work has increased at least four times since I started.

"I want to stop the rumours about my retirement. I just think this position needs someone who is going to be around more than I plan on."

Robertson was full of praise for the volunteers and the hours they put in. Noting he believes larger centres don't have the commitment that he has seen in 100 Mile House, Robertson said the local volunteers are incredible and get as much, or more, done than some places who have paid employees.

Everyone chipped in for a gift for him to show their appreciation of all his work. Good natured ribbing, teasing and laughter filled the room as people announced the admiration the folks have for him.

"Volunteering here gave me pleasure. I was doing something for the community."
