Walking club a step in the right direction

The Forest Grove Walking Club gathered at a home near the Grove for a winter walk recently.

The Forest Grove Walking Club has been up and walking since the fall of 1998.

It began as a social group to bring together neighbours and newcomers to the Grove. Another objective was to provide an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful country around Forest Grove.

An increase in fitness is an added bonus. The group firmly believes in the old adage, “Use it or lose it.”

In December, walkers and several guests met at the home of Al and Barb Thomas for a lovely Christmas walk that was followed by a potluck lunch and a celebration in honour of Frances Reid’s 80th birthday.

Frances and fellow speedster Richard Bergen lead the pack every Monday.

There are different walking levels in the group, ranging from those who stroll to those who speed walk. There is no commitment involved in joining this club, which isn’t really a club, just a shared enjoyment in walking with friends, with better health as a benefit.

The club meets at the fire hall, Mondays at 11 a.m.

Guiding in the Grove

On Jan. 23, the Forest Grove Girl Guides and Brownies participated in a combined Chinese New Year/ Robbie Burns celebration.

The party began with the piping-in of the haggis. Julie Dewsbury read the Address to the Haggis and proposed a toast to the spicy delicacy.

The girls sampled haggis on crackers, and then used chopsticks to eat Chinese noodles. Dessert was traditional Scottish shortbread cookies.

Entertainment followed dinner. Decorations included red paper lanterns the girls had made and decorated with Chinese characters. A wonderful dragon made of a sheet and streamers, with a fiercely painted head, swayed around the room, with groups of girls taking turns dancing underneath.

The evening ended with the older girls doing a highland fling they had practiced earlier with instructor Kjerstin Dunk.

Community Family Day

Be sure to add this special event to your calendars.

On Feb. 25, the 94 Lions are hosting a Community Family Day at Ruth Lake Park. Planning is underway for ice skating and lots of other activities, as well as a Cariboo bonfire to keep everyone warm.

Speed limits

Thank you to all of the logging truck drivers who slow down in the school zone.

We do notice and appreciate your diligence. Other vehicle drivers who also respect the speed limit through the Grove are also to be commended.

Bon Appétit

Here’s a tip from cooks who moved from the Coast to the Cariboo.

Apparently our higher altitude can make Yorkshire puddings turn out like hockey pucks. Sally Kelleher and Leonnah Yostt assure us that mixing the ingredients in reverse, dry ingredients first, then eggs and milk, will produce perfect Yorkshires to accompany your roasts.

Calendar

The Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department is having an open fire pit demonstration at the hall on Feb. 12, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided. For information, contact Margo Wagner at 397-0016 or Bob Felker at 397-2393.
