There are bikes and then there is the Big Bike

An enthusiastic and energetic spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation HSF), April Roberts is raising funds for the HSF by building a team for the Big Bike Ride on May 30.

"I only need seven more riders for the Big Bike Ride; we need a total of 29 riders," says Roberts. "I hope the weather is as nice as it has been."

Some of the stories from the participants are quite touching, she says, adding people are riding in memory of loved ones, for relatives or friends that have had health issues or for themselves.

The minimum donation for each rider is $50, she notes, but they are welcome to raise more.

"Even if it is only $50 each, it will be a sizable donation to Heart and Stroke Foundation. A team could win the automated external defibrillator for their community, if they receive enough votes."

The team has to upload its picture and provide a description of all the ways the team shows heart.

The ride starts at 3:30 p.m. in the Save-On-Foods parking lot, goes up Birch Avenue to Fifth Street, down towards Highway 97, and then back to Save-On-Foods.

"There are some people in the front doing a lot of pedalling, but most of the back members are just waving and having a good time. It’s a lot of fun."
