A lot of South Cariboo families participated in the 31st Annual Terry Fox

People in the South Cariboo carried on the legacy of Terry Fox admirably on Sept. 18, raising $1,486.05 at the 31st Annual Terry Fox Run for cancer research.

Participation was up, at 120 registrants compared to last year's tally of 74, and many of them were children, says Shelly Morton, run day manager.

"There were a lot of families out, and I'm so amazed with all the kids, and most of them ran, while others biked."

She adds many donations were dropped off by people who didn't participate in the walk/run, helping to increase the total.

A memory board was covered with touching messages for loved ones lost to, or stricken by, cancer. Stories were also shared by many about previous Terry Fox runs, and at least one participant, had run in all 30, says Morton.

She is grateful to all who came out to support the run, including volunteers, RCMP members who provided traffic control, and Safeway, which donated apples for the runners.

The National School Terry Fox Run Takes place on Sept. 28 and schools in 100 Mile House will be joining together on their run across town.

Karen Johnson, a teacher and one of the run co-ordinators for Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School, estimates the combined number of students and staff will be around 900.
