SPCA auction numbers and dollars down

SPCA dinner/auction fundraiser took a hit due to stiff competition

There was no shortage of items up for bid at the recent SPCA fundraiser auction, but attendance was down significantly.

Only 54 tickets were sold for the Oct. 15 event, which SPCA Community Council chair Jennifer Appleby notes was down by nearly 50 per cent.

The small group managed to raise a net amount of $4,000, which Appleby says is not great, but more than they had before the auction.

"It's not the end of the world, but it's our biggest fundraiser of the year. There was a lot going on in town that day."

Appleby says she believes the money will be enough to get them through the year, with their biggest expense being the spay-and-neuter program. She adds their pet food is supplied free of charge by a large pet food company.

The local SPCA does not have a central shelter, but relies on foster care for homeless animals. Appleby says they are always in need of more foster homes for dogs and cats.
