A local woman who holds annual bake sales for charity raised what some may find an amazing amount of money for an individual to accomplish – with a little help from her friends.

Sue Stephens has been a supporter of the BC SPCA for decades and holds a charity bake sale each year, This time she shared the $1,930 she raised between the British Columbia Children's Hospital ($1,000), the local SPCA ($800) and the Canadian Wildlife Federation ($120).

"Usually I send it to the BC SPCA in Vancouver, but this year I wanted it to stay local in 100 Mile House for neutering, spaying, and helping people out that are adopting dogs."

Stephens made more than 130 pies herself, and with the many other items she and her team of helpers baked, sold thousands of items at her home near north Horse Lake on May 30.

There were "tons of cupcakes," cinnamon buns, cakes, bread and both fruit and meat pies snapped up at the bake sale, she explains.

"Many thanks to all the bakers – you know who you are."

Stephens notes she started supporting the BC SPCA in the 1990s when she owned and operated a beauty salon in town, and with the help of her staff, customers and other fundraising activities, and over the years has raised more than $35,000 for animal-protection activities.

This generous volunteer is also an animal lover who has personally adopted 24 dogs over the years.

"I never foster them – I couldn't give them back."
