Paws and enjoy the canine cause

Paws for a Cause is the largest annual fundraiser for the SPCA

It's that time once again when folks can enjoy fun and games with their pet and family, while they raise funds for the SPCA.

Paws for a Cause is the largest annual fundraiser for the SPCA and anyone can participate on Sept. 11 with or without a dog.

Organizer Cat Barnicoat says borrowing a friend’s dog, bringing a cat (that is accustomed to dogs) or going "petless" is fine, too.

She explains the event, which is sponsored by BC SPCA and Scotiabank, will feature dog agility trials, doggie games and a hotdog barbecue.

Based in Centennial Park, Barnicoat says this year will see dog-walkers downtown while they stretch their legs along Birch Avenue and raise money through the pledges they gather ahead of the event.

It's easier for those with strollers or wheelchairs to walk along the sidewalks than across the grass in the park, she notes, and it will also help raise awareness in town.

The doggy and children's games are always a blast, and while this year's are still in the planning stages, she explains past events have brought loads of laughter with the wiener-dunking and waggiest tail competitions.

Aside from the all-important awareness it brings to the animal welfare cause, the money raised helps the local SPCA cover the costs of spaying, neutering and the pet fostering program, she explains.

Registration is 10 a.m. at the park, but she notes fundraising pledges start well ahead of the event, so visit www.spca.bc.ca/branches/100-mile-house for registration forms.
