New assistant librarian Gina Gigliotti arrived recently from Medicine Hat

Moving from Medicine Hat, Alberta to 100 Mile House may not be something that everyone would do, but when the Cariboo Regional District Library — 100 Mile Branch posted a job, Gina Gigliotti had no problem relocating.

This is a newly created position and exactly what I was looking for, says Gigliotti.

“I assist the area librarian Roxy Barnes in the overall operations and delivery of branch services. I will be co-ordinating the children’s programming and supervising the circulation desk. Roxy has many responsibilities running the library and I am here to help her.”

The position was posted online, and after sending her application, Gigliotti travelled here in early November for an interview. She started her new job in early January.

The mother of two university-aged sons graduated in 2003 from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) with a library information technology diploma and then worked at the Medicine Hat College library.

She still has a home in Medicine Hat and her husband will join her in 100 Mile House after the house is sold.

Starting right to work, Gigliotti has some children’s programs underway: Toddler time 18 months to three years, Fridays, 10-10:30 a.m.; Storytime, three to five years, Wednesdays, 10-11 a.m. and Thursdays, 1:30-2:30 p.m.; and ABC, six to eight years, Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. and nine to 12 years on Thursdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is needed for these sessions which will go until March 24.

Gigliotti is also involved with setting up “Munsch Mania” on Jan. 29 to celebrate National Literacy Day. This family event runs 11 a.m. to noon, and a librarian will read selections from well-known children’s author Robert Munsch.

“I’m excited about working here. I look at it as an adventure and a wonderful opportunity.”

For more information or to register for the children’s programs, stop in at the library at 449 Birch Ave., or call 250-395-2332.
