Teacher Tammie Ozanne did an amazing job organizing the students at Horse Lake Elementary in a fundraiser on Feb. 27 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon. Incorporating the educational component of healthy living into the lives of students, as well as giving back to one's community for a good cause, brought out the enthusiasm and excitement for this event.

With some lively music, students participated in skipping, basketball and hula-hooping. They were encouraged to bring in cash donations from family and friends and collected a whopping $2,735.80.

Fun day

Kyra Hopson's Grade 6/7 class held a fun day on Feb. 24 that found students participating in a lot of fun activities.

There was a fishpond, bowling, hockey shooting, face painting and other fun events. They made $500 that will help pay for their ski trip to Mt. Timothy on March 8.

Potluck supper

The Lone Butte – Horse Lake Community Association held a potluck community supper March 4 and there was a good turnout.

This is a great way to meet other people in our community and share some great food. Organizers are hoping to make this a regular event. Call the writer for more information.

Spring Fling

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Spring Fling Dance that will be held on April 14 at the Lone Butte Community Hall.

The community hall is in need of some substantial repairs, so all proceeds from this dance will be used directly toward this project.

Mark Allen will be playing, so it is sure to be a good time. Tickets are $15 per person, and after March 14, they will be on sale at the Lone Butte General Store, or call Elaine Kisby at 250-395-4385 to reserve yours now.

Memories shared

On the afternoon of Feb.19, memories were shared; tears were shed, stories swapped and laughter exchanged in honour of Hans Griese, longtime area resident and woodman of Lone Butte.

I don't think a day will pass when locals driving by Hans' cutting lot on Watch Lake Road won't miss seeing his familiar figure for many years to come.

Good fishing

There was a great turnout for the annual Horse Lake Fishing Derby on Feb. 26.

Some 180 tickets were sold in support of the event with about 120 fishers participating in the derby.

Several young participants won top prizes, including Jeremy Pierre, 11, bringing in the prize-winning 14 lb. 4 oz. lake trout for a $300 prize.

Liame Edle, 9, brought in a 1 lb. 7 oz. lake trout for second-place prize of $100, and Shawn Altmannshofer took third with a 1 lb. 11 oz. laker.

In the rainbow trout category, Gary Oling took home first- and third-place prizes with catches of 1 lb. 12 oz. and 11.5 oz. Russ Phillips reeled in the second-place catch, 1 lb. 7 oz.

There were many theories on the next category, but, unfortunately, there were no kokanee caught this year.
