Hampers ensure all South Cariboo families have Christmas dinner this season

The 100 Mile House & District Women's Centre Society is currently receiving donations for its Christmas hamper program.

The program aims to provide every family with a Christmas dinner this season.

The hampers free up money for families to buy presents for their children,” says Sarah Hockett, Women's Centre office co-ordinator.

Hockett adds one point of emphasis for this year concerns the nature of the donations.

While donating certain food items are OK, we encourage people to make a financial donation, say $5-$10, or however much you want to contribute. The Women's Centre will then purchase food for the hampers.

"Every hamper will contain a turkey or ham, assorted side dishes, stuff like juice, water, etc.

Along with ensuring every family has a dinner, we also stress healthy eating and the social nature of the occasion. We want families to be close again.”

There is also an emphasis on children, Hockett notes.

We especially want no child to go hungry this holiday,” says Hockett.

However, if families want to contribute toys, Hockett adds they should donate them to the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre at 1-486 Birch Ave. in 100 Mile House.

We also try to include items like a coupons – a milk coupon for example – in the hampers. Families can choose to use it for Christmas dinner or later in the month if they want to.”

Given that 100 Mile & District Women's Society is a non-profit organization, contributions are all tax deductible. Those who make an in-kind donation can get a receipt.

The Women's Centre (102-475 Birch Ave.) would like everyone's contribution to be in before Dec. 10.
