With the South Cariboo Fall Fair in 100 Mile House taking place Sept. 6-8 everyone is carefully watching the weather.

Flower beds and vegetable patches are being covered every night to protect the Fall Fair entries because it would only take one frosty night to dash one's hopes of a blue ribbon.

Recipes are being tested and tasted to get just the right pie or cake, and knitting needles and crochet hooks have been madly clicking for months creating a fabulous article for display and a ribbon at the fair. Sewing machines have been whirring and table saws have been buzzing, getting a unique project ready to enter into the competition.

Photos are being taken and pictures have been painted all in the hopes of taking home a prize. Everyone is getting organized and geared up for the big challenge.

Legion karaoke

The Forest Grove Legion is always a busy place and Aug. 23 was no exception.

It was karaoke night and everyone was in fine voice. Those who didn't get up to sing were on the dance floor. People took their turns in the limelight, singing their favourite songs and having a laugh or two. Paul Whitehead got up and belted out a number and Walter Jenke was seated centre stage at one point and serenaded.

Karaoke will be back at the Legion for this year’s Halloween dance.

Family picnic

A potluck family picnic was held in the back yard of the Legion on Aug. 25 between noon and 5 p.m.

There were free hamburgers and hotdogs and everyone who came brought a potluck dish to add to the picnic. The Legion ladies auxiliary brought desserts and, of course, Jill Hardcastle did face painting.

All the children were treated to games, bubbles and colouring books. The weather was glorious and everyone had a great time.

Support appreciated

Legion president Jim Tindale thanks everyone who has helped make all of the events successful so far this year

Jim says he hopes all of them will continue to support all the activities in the future.

Look up

When was the last time you stopped and took a look at the night sky?

Unless it’s cloudy, the Cariboo night skies are perfect for star gazing because there is no light interference. Every night, there is something spectacular to see whether it’s a satellite, the International Space Station (ISS) or a meteor shower.

Folks don't need a powerful telescope to see any of the above, as a pair of binoculars will do just fine. Even with the naked eye, there are some things you can't miss.

The Big Dipper, which almost right over 100 Mile House right now, and the Milky Way are two examples. The next full moon is on Sept. 19 so get your binoculars out and have a look and be amazed. There are tons of websites regarding astronomy and one called n2yo.com is particularly interesting because it allows people to track the ISS in real time. It travels at more than 27,000 km/h and is at an altitude of more than 260 miles. The ISS orbits the earth every 90 minutes.

Correction

In my last column, I made a few mistakes regarding the new Forest Grove playground equipment. Kelly Kelsey is the treasurer of the Forest Grove Community and Parent Advisory Council. The price of the playground equipment is more than $37,000 and there was still $7,000 left to raise. Fundraising will continue until all the money is in place.
