The new year has brought a new, though familiar, face to the position of secretary at Horse Lake Elementary School.

Linda Lytton, who has been a secretary with the school district for 14 years, previously at 100 Mile Elementary and Bridge Lake Elementary schools will be at Horse Lake Elementary for the rest of the year.

The students and staff will miss Leila Emery’s smiling face in the office, as she held the secretary position there since September 2010. She has moved over to Forest Grove Elementary School.

Memorial plans

In the wake of the tragic loss of Henry Van Kessel last fall in the line of duty, the Lone Butte Volunteer Fire Department (LBVFD) members are looking at building a memorial to be placed in front of the hall in the spring.

They will do some landscaping and plant several memory trees that will surround a granite monument with a plaque commemorating Henry’s life.

In 100 Mile House, they will also be placing a plaque at the Bob Patterson Memorial at the fire hall. Anyone interested in donating or being part of this, can contact Lone Butte fire chief Mike Collinge at the Lone Butte fire hall at 250-395-3112.

Meanwhile, several new recruits have been taking various training courses with plans of being accepted into the LBVFD.

It takes about three months of training to be confident in one’s abilities to perform the job as a volunteer firefighter, Collinge says.

He adds they are still accepting applications and have room for a couple more volunteers if you are interested.

Morning fire

Laurie and Randy Bishop of South Netherlands Road lost their storage building sometime in the early morning hours of Jan. 7.

Thoughtful friends have generously helped them replace some of their daughter’s horse tack, while they will feel the loss of their quad and various other items lost in the blaze.

They are very thankful that the fire was contained to their shed and didn’t spread to any other structures on their property.

The hay for their daughter’s horse can be replaced, and they are grateful no one was hurt and no animals lost.

Fishing derby

Remember to register for the Horse Lake Fishing Derby on Jan. 30.
