To celebrate its final year as the 2010/11 Forest Capital of Canada, the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is looking forward to hosting another exciting lineup of events during National Forest Week.

This year, the CRD is partnering with its local schools to host the first annual Big Tree Hunt. Students and teachers will engage in a friendly competition to find the largest trees in their area in hopes of winning the grand prize, fame and glory.

The business community will be celebrating National Forest Week again this year with the second annual Storefront Business Challenge. Participating businesses will decorate their storefronts to celebrate this year’s theme: Forests for People.

Residents are encouraged to support local business and see what their ingenious minds have created. To find a complete list of participating businesses visit the CRD website at www.cariboord.bc.ca.

Lastly, be sure to mark your calendars for the next instalment in the Forest Capital Speaker Series, Forest Communities in Transition, presented by Professor Robert Kozak from the University of British Columbia. In 100 Mile House, the talk will take place in the Valley Room behind The Lodge, starting at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3.

It has been an exciting two years as the Forest Capital of Canada. In 2010, the Cariboo-Chilcotin reached the world stage on BC Street during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games.

This year marked the release of Our Backyard – Forests of the Cariboo Chilcotin, a magazine exploring all facets of our forest resources, and in June, the CRD partnered with the District of 100 Mile House to host the 2011 BC Community Forest Association Conference.

It doesn’t end here – 2012 will be another exciting year in B.C., as the CRD passes off its Forest Capital of Canada designation to the BC Forest Service to celebrate its 100 year anniversary.

The CRD encourages everyone to celebrate 2011 National Forest Week. To learn more about the regional district’s events, visit the CRD website at www.cariboord.bc.ca.
