When the second semester of school started, I had an extra block that I needed to fill, so I explored my options and noticed textiles was one of them.

I got put into the class and since then I have loved every minute of it. When I was younger, I used to make miniature heart-shaped pillows out of felt, but that was only hand sewing, so when I had to learn how to use a sewing machine, I was very nervous.

The first couple weeks for me were slow, but that was because our first assignment was a hand-sewn needle book. I took a lot of time on this project because I wanted to make sure my stitching was precise; it was not particularly good but to be fair I hadn’t sewn in ages. I caught on quite fast using the sewing machine, it was scary at first because of how fast the needle went but once I learned how to control the pedal a bit better it was really fun.

Textiles is my most relaxing and exciting class of the day; it is such a great hobby to get into and it is so rewarding looking at something that you created all by yourself. The projects we have made are a needle book, a mouse pincushion, a mug rug, a pillowcase, a dog bone travel pillow, a magic bag, or a drawstring bag, and then you get a project of your choice.

I just finished the dog bone travel pillow before spring break and I would say it was my best project yet, I worked well with the sewing machine, my turns were clean, everything was placed correctly and looked incredibly good. One thing I love about this class is that you earn this confidence, I feel so good about myself once I complete a project.

I would recommend this class to so many people, I have had the most fun in there, learning all the different techniques, playing around with different fabrics and cool stitches. I think everyone should take up sewing as a hobby, it’s so creative and exciting, you can do so many things too, crocheting, knitting and many more!
