The 70 Mile House Volunteer Fire Department attended the Redneck Craft Fair, and the volunteer firefighters played lots of games with the Children who attended the Community Club event. The favourite game was a water balloon fight. It was a hot, sunny day and none of the combatants appeared to mind being hit by the cool balloons. (Ken Alexander photo)

The 70 Mile Community Club held its Annual General Meeting at the Community Hall on Feb. 24 and there was a great turnout, according to club chair Ken Huber.

He said more than 25 members showed up for the AGM, compared to “the six or eight members who attended last year’s AGM.”

He added two people signed up for memberships and several others renewed their memberships at the meeting.

Huber noted the club membership has grown quite a bit compared to years past.

There have been some changes in the executive and how the club will be operating this year.

Huber is the chair again this year. Sally Watson is the new vice-chair. Joy Gammie is the secretary and April Huber is the treasurer.

This year, the directors-at-large are Karyn Greenlees, Lori Spencer and Marion Roman.

The club changed the structure of how the club is going to work, the chair said, adding some of the projects the club is doing are going to be operated by committees now.

“We changed the structure so it’s not so onerous on the executive members because it’s just too much work for them.”

The new committees will be the Riding Arena, Pancake Breakfasts, Coffee’s On, and the Poker Tournaments.

All of the committees will have a chair and a recording secretary to keep records of how their operations are managed. The secretaries will have to send their committees’ minutes to the executive so everyone is in the loop.

The club also decided to have a new family membership for two parents and children under the age of 18 years. The cost will be $40 a year.

The club also decided to change some of the events they will hold this year.

Because the club was competing with three other nearby communities at their Redneck Craft Fair on July 1 last year, the club decided to change the date of the event to July 6. The club also decided to change the name of the event from Redneck Craft Fair to Country Craft Fair because several people thought “Redneck” was too offensive.

However, the club will continue to have a Canada Day celebration at the Community Hall on July 1.

The club will be adding a Duck Race to the community events, but they still have to decide on a date and time. It is being coordinated by Sally Watson so it will be a lot of fun.

Community Dinner successful

Huber said the Community Dinner at the Community Hall on Feb. 10, which was for 70 Mile House residents only, was a great success.

He said the event was a make-up dinner for the Christmas Dinner that was cancelled because of the flu bug that was raging through the community last December.

The dinner included roast beef and ham as well as scalloped and mashed potatoes, salad and dessert.

Huber said the club gave appreciation plaques to Gail and Richard Moseley and Bonnie L’Heureux for their long service to the community.

The club got $700 worth of food and money donated at the event, which was split between the food banks in 100 Mile House and Clinton.

Retirement planning

South Cariboo Seniors Navigator Watson hosted a coffee meeting at the Community Hall on Feb. 27.

The guest speaker was investment and retirement planner Doug Stecyk.

He provided information about banking and estate planning.

For more information, contact Watson at 250-395-0278.

70 Mile social events

Huber said the club will be providing its popular, by-donation pancake breakfasts on the first Saturday of each month with the next set for April 7.

He added they will also offer French toast if there are enough volunteers in the kitchen to watch both the pancakes and French toast as they are cooking.

The next pancake breakfast will be on March 2 from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be door prizes and maybe some baked goods will be available.

Poker Fundraiser

There will be a Texas Hold-em poker fundraiser at the Community Hall on the third Saturday of the month.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and poker starts at 11 a.m. sharp.

The buy-in is $30, which includes a lunch. If you have any questions, call Dennis Huber at 250-456-6050.

The South Cariboo Community Fellowship services are held in the Community Hall on Sundays starting at 2 p.m.

On the first Sunday of the month, there is a potluck meal starting at 12:30 p.m.
