Canim Lake Sawmills plywood plant operation would return to a five-day work week but with a shift reduction of 42 employees. “Essentially there is no change in production or man-days worked per week, but rather a redistribution of work to senior employees by giving them back their fifth working day,” said mill general manager Abe Friesen. He said nine would be recalled when their veneer inventory is back in balance.

The Ainsworth oriented strand board (OSB) mill hit the hearing stage with residents expecting to hear in about three months if the $60 million plant gets the timber it needs, although it would be at least two years before it could be in operation said Kelly McCloskey, Ainsworth’s manager of forestry and special projects, with at least six months between public hearings and the first shovels in the ground as well as an 18-month construction period.

Seven local young “ranchers” were given a taste of the rigours of filmmaking last week, as they took part in a “shoot” for a Canadian segment of the popular children’s show, Sesame Street. The segment was shot at the Monical’s 105 Mile Cattle Ranch. The shoot began with the young riders saddling up to bring in a herd of 500 bred cows, with feeding and a dogsled ride also included as part of the shoot.

A log B&B at the Big Horse Ranch caught fire and was destroyed. “When we got there it was totally engulfed in flames,” said 108 Mile volunteer fire chief Wayne Sharun. “How do you ever replace all those things,” said owner Everett Lightfoot. Firefighters got the call at around 9:30 and 13 108 firefighters and four 100 Mile House firefighters were on site until 4 p.m. to ensure the fire had been completely smothered.

Increased garbage collection costs, resulting from the commercial tipping fee implemented last summer at the 100 Mile Landfill has a few local business owners trashing the new rate system. Businesses reported their costs their costs doubled. Several business owners said the increased costs should be shared between residential and business.
