Aug. 4 was an exciting day for folks along South Green Lake Road.

The South Green Lake Volunteer Fire Department (SGLVFD) auxiliary and firefighters put on the annual Community Day, and Brad and Gail Potter hosted their Second Annual Pig Roast that evening.

Community Day

Key organizer Jenny Gehl says the event was a huge success and estimates upwards of 400 people attended.

“We actually went through 324 hotdogs and about 10-12 gallons of ice cream.”

The Bouncy Castle and Bucket Brigade races were new activities this year and were well received, she notes.

‘Sparky’ the fire mascot, which was borrowed from Kamloops Fire Rescue, did a fantastic job as he mingled with the children – he must have been a hot dog in his suit.

Gehl says the pie sale, which is a major fundraiser for the fire department, was a great success. The raffles always draw in the crowds and this year was no different, she adds.

The children loved the activity table where they decorated windsocks.

Community members were very generous with their donations for the BC Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.

The Fire Smart and fire sprinkler displays were well received and once again a number of sprinkler systems were sold.

Pig Roast

Wind and the Pillows B&B Retreat/Resort hosted its Second Annual Welcome Back Community Party in remembrance of the Wildfires in 2017. Pressy Lake, Green Lake, 70 Mile House and Watch Lake residents were invited.

Brad and Gail Potter hosted and entertained the crowd with music for around 80-plus neighbours.

The potluck dinner was fabulous with tons of wonderful food, Gail says, adding the roast pig was 100 pounds and not much was left after everyone filled their plates.

“Thank you very much for those wonderful people who helped with set-up before and tear-down after the dinner.

“It was so wonderful to see such good friends and neighbours from all over the area.”

Evacuation alert

At 4 p.m. on Aug. 11, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) issued an evacuation alert for South Green Lake and 70 Mile House residents due to a wildfire burning near Twin Creek, which posed a threat to people and property.

Some 20 SGLVFD firefighters went door-to-door notifying residents an alert had been issued and left information pamphlets at the residences where no one was home.

Some residents – full-time and seasonal – packed up and left that night and others left the following day.

Recycling changes

The 70 Mile Eco Depot is changing its recycling program because the TNRD has joined the province-wide Recycle BC program.

The local depot has moved to a six-stream system.

There will be five new smaller bins in the recycling area, with glass bottles and jars still going into the large white bags.

One of the smaller bins is for paper and boxboard (large cardboard will go into a big bin).

Other small bins will be for containers (plastic, metal and paper); plastic bags and overwrap; white foam packaging; and coloured foam packaging.
