Tomahawks one-and-one on the road

Drew Rose proves to be a good acquisition for Lac la Hache Tomahawks

Lac la Hache Tomahawks had a seesaw weekend, first freezing out Omenica Ice, 5-4 on Oct. 29 at the Vanderhoof Municipal Arena, then letting the Quesnel Kangaroos get a 15-5 jump on them in their Oct. 30 game played at the Quesnel Arena.

In Vanderhoof, Tye Moses opened the scoring for the Tomahawks on a power play, just under seven minutes into the game. He also scored the 4-4 tiebreaker early in the third. Drew Rose, newly signed to the Tomahawks, contributed two and Robin Gilbert was good for one.

"The guys jumped out there and played hard," says coach Al Navrot.

"We played a strong defensive game and it worked. Willie Sellars was unbelievable in goal."

Omenica pulled their goalie in the final minutes, hoping to even the score again but failed to pull it together.

Long hours on the bus wore on the team, says Navrot, making Sunday's challenge with Quesnel tougher than expected.

The Tomahawks started strong with two early first-period goals by Bryan Adolph and Devry Johnny, but the Kangaroos pushed the score up to 5-2 in their favour before the end of the frame.

Action slowed in the second with just one Quesnel goal scored and a single put away by Tomahawks' Rose. Although Lac la Hache out shot Quesnel 19-6 in the period, Navrot says they couldn't beat goaltender Josh Levesque.

"If shots had gone our way, it would have been a different story. Quesnel played hard and played hard all the time."

Rose came through again with a third-period goal and Moses added one to the Tomahawks' tally but nothing could stop an assault by Quesnel, which saw them put nine more goals on the scoreboard before the end of the game.

Navrot is optimistic about the season and excited about signing Rose who played senior AAA in Saskatchewan and also put in time with the Williams Lake Timberwolves Junior A club.

"He's a game winner and a good grab for us."

Wade Balbirnie, previously with the Kitimat Ice Demons, is also a new roster addition. He brings experience to the ice and strength to the dressing room, says Navrot.

Tomahawks play at home on Nov. 5 with the Williams Lake Stampeders. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena in Lac la Hache.
