Seeing a snow-blanketed Barkerville in the winter was the highlight of a recent snowmobile trip made by 18 riders from the South Cariboo.
The 100 Mile Snowmobile Club organized the March 10-11 trip, which started at Keithley Creek, just beyond Likely and brought riders through landmarks, such as Cunningham Pass, Devil's Eyebrow and Grouse Creek, past Barkerville and on to Wells.
It was a 160-kilometre round trip on established trails, but according to club president Al Reichardt, falling snow on Saturday and resulting poor visibility made riding that day a challenge.
"It was just a matter of getting there safely."
On the outskirts of Barkerville, they parked the sleds and walked along the main street, taking in the magical sight, says Reichardt.
"With five or six feet of snow in town, on and around the buildings, it was something to see."
The group continued on to Wells where they had a buffet dinner and spent the night at the historic Wells Hotel.
Late the next morning, they were back on the trail and headed for home by way of Richfield and Yank's Peak where they took time to test their sleds in the deep snow.
"It was a great experience."
