100 Mile player Catherine Foote showed fine form when she threw in the ball during a U13 match against Quesnel in 100 Mile House on June 13. Foote and her teammates took third place in the league playoffs against this same squad in Quesnel on June 19.

It was a heart-thumping finish, but the 100 Mile House U13 Girls rep team took third place in their division of the Cariboo Youth Soccer League (CYSL) playoffs in Quesnel on June 19.

The girls played two games on Father's Day, and were doubled 8-4 by the Williams Lake U14 squad in their first contest. Team manager Pam Easton says they had trouble contending with the older girls throughout the season.

Delaney Speers had another strong game in the nets for 100 Mile, she adds, and the goal scorers were Kira Saenger, Paige Hall and Avery Rutledge.

They returned to the pitch to take on Quesnel in the game for third and fourth place in the league, and this contest turned out to be a beauty, says Easton.

To say it was a tightly contested game would be an understatement, as they were tied at five apiece after regulation play and two overtimes.

Charlie McQueen was in net for 100 Mile, and the regulation-time scorers were Karlie Easton, Hall and Rutledge.

This match had to be decided by a shootout with goals coming from Easton, Saenger, Rutledge and Chantelle Walters.

While the season is over for most of the girls, Easton, Hall, Saenger and Taylor Hawes were invited to play with Quesnel at a tourney in Kelowna on the Canada Day long weekend.

U15 boys

The 100 Mile U15 Boys rep team came away from Quesnel with the CYSL division championship on June 19.

John Parker, who coaches the squad with his wife, Krista, says his boys played two games, with their ending in a 2-2 draw with Williams Lake.

In that game, the 100 Mile boys ended up losing their captain Matias Swalwell to an injury for the rest of the day, Park says, adding he hopes it's not for the rest of the season.

The second contest determined who placed first and second in the division. Williams Lake took a lead in the first half, but midway through the second half, Cole Zimmerman tied the game for 100 Mile.

At the end of regulation time, the game was tied 1-1. After 10 minutes of overtime, the game went to a shootout to declare a winner.

It took six shooters per team, but 100 Mile came out on top as winner for the U15 Boys division championship.

"Our keeper Jesse Chamberlain stopped three of the six shots [a remarkable feat for soccer goalies to have a 50 per cent save rate in shootouts], and Nathan Foote scored the eventual winner in the shootout giving the team the win."

Park says it has been a difficult year for the team because there are only 14 players and they have suffered numerous injuries this season. The squad has had to play against teams with much older players, he adds, and for some on the players, this is their first time playing on a rep team.

"However that being said, the team has continued to grow and [the boys have excelled] as soccer players. We won our division in CYSL and are now setting our sights on provincials."

The U15 Boys and Girls Provincial B Cup soccer championships are being held here in 100 Mile House, July 7-10.

Park says his boys are looking forward to playing in their hometown, and representing their area in youth soccer.

"The competition will be stiff, but I am confident our team is able to rise to the occasion."
