More than 130 riders compete at Horse Trials B.C. championships

Island 22 Horse Trials returns with cross-country, show jumping, dressage in Chilliwack

More than 130 equestrian riders from across B.C. and their horses will be in Chilliwack for a three-day Olympic sport on Labour Day weekend.

The 36th annual Island 22 Horse Trials B.C. Championships returns to Chilliwack from Friday, Aug. 30 to Sunday, Sept. 1. The event, hosted by the Island 22 Equestrian Society, is open to the public.

Things kick off with dressage on Aug. 30. This event involves a set pattern with required movements performed by horse and rider as judges watch the suppleness, balance, gaits, and rhythm.

Saturday is the cross-country phase where riders gallop across the 80-acre terrain of Island 22 negotiating log jumps, ditches, banks, and the popular water jump where spectators can gather to watch.

Sunday will again test horse and rider with show jumping, the final phase of the three-day event. This event tests the horse and rider to successfully complete a set course of stadium jumps without knocking down or refusing any jumps.

Awards will follow throughout the day on Sunday.

Here's the schedule for the Island 22 Horse Trials B.C. Championships: dressage on Friday, Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; cross-country on Saturday, Aug. 31 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and show jumping on Sunday, Sept. 1, starting at 8 a.m. with the highest level going first.

Entry to this public event is free, and parking is $5. There is also a concession on site.
