Midgets ready for provincial berth showdown

A best of three-game series for midget zone hockey championships and a berth at provincials has come down to a deciding game that will be played in 100 Mile House.

Last weekend, 100 Mile Sport Shop Midget Reps travelled to Quesnel for games 1 and 2 of the qualifier, which ended in a draw.

100 Mile won the first of the series 5-3, with first-period goals by Mark Boyce and Matt Pistell. In the second period, Duncan Wallace and Kevin Raimundo added to the tally to make it 4-2.

Raimundo scored an empty-net marker in the third to secure the victory.

Sunday's game saw 100 Mile start aggressively and score the opening goal with a set-up from Micky Turner to Reece Forman.

By the end of the second period, Quesnel had a 2-1 lead, but 100 Mile came out strong in the third with two quick goals by Raimundo and Keenan Butcher.

Jordan Purcha scored late in the period to tie the game 4-4, and send it into overtime.

The first period of OT was fruitless, but Quesnel managed to capitalize on a tiring 100 Mile team and sneak one past goalie Owen Sutton in the second period of OT.

Despite the loss, Sutton had a strong game, facing 52 shots.

Game 3 of the series will be played at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m., and the team is hoping supporters will come out and cheer them on.
