The sun shone for participants at the 100 Mile House Elementary School track and field meet on May 19, lighting the way for one record-breaking performance.
Katya Levermann cleared 1.29 metres in the 12-year-old female high jump, beating the old record by five centimetres. That long-standing record had held since 1989.
Cheering from the sidelines all day, as students supported their fellow athletes during the races, made school vice-principal Jim Price also feel like a winner.
"We must be doing something right. Students were full of encouragement for each other. It was nice to see."
While the meet offered a great opportunity for in-school competition, it also served as the qualifier for the upcoming South End Inter-school Track Meet. 100 Mile Elementary hosts that event on June 9, with races slated to run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In preparation for that, elementary schools in the South End are holding their own inter-school track meets where the top 2 finishers in each event will qualify to compete at the inter school meet.
