KidSport here to help local youth

South Cariboo KidSport chapter helps local athletes compete

KidSport is a non-profit organization, which works to eliminate the financial barriers that can keep youth 18 years and under from participating in sports.

The South Cariboo chapter helps to pay registration costs for between 50 and 60 children each year in sports, including hockey, figure skating, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, baseball, soccer and other organized, coached sports.

Local KidSport representative John Benastick says they are able to sponsor children for up to $200 this year, which is up from last year's limit of $100.

Sponsorship money came from the KidSport organization, the local minor hockey club, and donations from fundraising events, such as the Mega Show and Celebration of Lights auction.

Benastick adds they haven't had many requests for sponsorship yet this year and he is urging people to take advantage of the program.

Applications can be found on the Internet at www.kidsportcanada.ca and click on "Find a chapter."

Completed forms can be dropped off at RE/MAX. People can also call Benastick for more information at 250-395-8225.
