The inaugural South Cariboo Junior Championship golf tournament, held Aug. 13 at the 108 Resort Golf Course, didn't draw a lot of players, but it still established itself as being worthy of inclusion in a future junior tour.

Eight young golfers, including two from Quesnel and six from the South Cariboo, played the 18-hole course from the white tees, and in the end, Lynden Jeffrey from 100 Mile House was the winner.

He shot a 75 to take the tournament and Jack Gale, also from 100 Mile House, was second with 76. Both won gift certificates and a sleeve of golf balls.

Caroline Jeffrey, who organized the event with 108 golf pro Kevin Hanbury, says that while prizes were awarded for the best scores, the tournament was geared more as a learning experience for young golfers who had never competed before.

"This was for those kids to come out and see what it's like."

Jeffrey adds she hopes the friendly home competition will encourage youths to consider joining a new northern tour, which she would like to establish next year.

The tournament saw Michael Montgomery, from 100 Mile House, win the long-drive prize on hole No. 16 and closest to the pin (KP) first shot on hole No. 12. Josh Blackmore, from Quesnel, won first shot KP on No. 15, and Jeffrey also took a prize for second shot KP on No. 5.

Tyker Purcha, from 100 Mile House, won most honest golfer, and all participants won door prizes and took home gift bags.
