Two local judokas got their first taste of competition recently, and coach Sabine Smolarek was impressed.

Holly Johnston, 8, and Jake Keirn, 10, participated for the first time at the BC Open 2014 tournament in Vernon on April 12.

“During several fights, both of them demonstrated great knowledge of judo techniques and understanding of the spirit of judo,” explains Smolarek of Shin Bu Kan Judo in 100 Mile House. “Holly was fighting against three boys and Jake was in a pool of six. That gave them the opportunity to try out many things they've learned. They did really well.”

Shin Bu Kan Judo, located on Cedar Avenue, has practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

“A big thank you goes out to the parents who were supporting Holly and Jake before, during and after the tournament,” adds Smolarek.

“They made friends at the tournament and had a lot of fun.”
