BC Hockey U16 Cup needs volunteers

Organizers of the upcoming BC Hockey Female U16 BC Cup are shifting into high gear as the event date draws nearer.

It takes place from March 31 to April 3 at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre (SCRC) and will involve six zone teams from all over British Columbia.

The North Zone, which includes the South Cariboo, recently announced Shian Remanente from 100 Mile House as a new addition to the team. She attended tryouts earlier in Mackenzie and joins the other local players - Cassidy Mellott, Adrianna Johnson and Breanna Uphill.

Tanya Ney, who is a member of the event organizing committee, says more volunteers are needed to ensure the success of the tourney. Currently, they are looking for help in the areas of security, time keeping, penalty box attendants and team helpers.

As part of the tournament events, Canlan Ice Sports and BC Hockey have teamed up to create a poster contest, open to girls between the ages of five and 14 years. The challenge is to create a poster that portrays, "What the spirit of hockey means to you."

Judges will select six winners who will attend the opening ceremonies, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on April 1, and spend April 2 with one of the teams both in the dressing room and on the bench.

Entries will be accepted at the Canlan office at the SCRC until March 28 at 4 p.m.

Entries must include your full name, age and phone number.

Tournament games get underway on April 1 at 8 a.m. and wrap up on April 2 at 8:30 p.m. Finals begin at 7:30 a.m. on April 3, with the gold-medal game at noon.
