Archery club offers free tryouts

Introduction to the sport available for youth, adults

The 100 Mile Bighorn Archery Club is offering a free chance for both children and adults to experience the sport – and they'll even loan folks the equipment for the tryout.

The Introduction to Archery event happens at the Stan Halcro Arena on Nov. 8, starting at 7 p.m., says club secretary denise swift.

"It's for people in town who are interested in archery, but don't really know what to do – and it also introduces them to our club."

Everyone aged 10 or older (children must be accompanied by an adult) is welcome to test their archery aptitude and enjoyment of the sport at this free event.

"We have about seven or eight bows of different poundages because it depends on how many pounds you can pull back. So, equipment is available for those people who don't have any and want to try it out."

Since archers form a line within a safety zone and take turns, no matter how many show up, swift says everyone always has a chance to shoot some arrows at club events.

The club will also offer two more evenings as a complimentary club member to anyone who participates in their Introduction to Archery event while they decide if they wish to join, she adds.

The club has traditional bows and arrows available for beginners to use, but there are various sizes, weights and models available on the market, such as compound bows.

However, swift says the club encourages new archery enthusiasts to not buy any equipment until they first determine what suits them best.

The club meets weekly on Tuesdays, 7-9 p.m., at the Stan Halcro Arena (unless outdoor temperatures drop below -10C, making it tougher to keep warm in the arena with only portable heaters).

She says annual costs to join the club membership normally cover January-December, but new members signing up now for 2017 can benefit from a bonus this fall.

"Anyone who joins now will get a free couple of months."

Annual membership costs for adults are $50, youth (aged 11-17) are $40, children (10 or under) are $35, and the family rate is $80.
